Weaknesses:

  • Tight and erratic steps at the second level
  • Limited snap quickness

Scouting Report:

Carlin is one of the stronger centers in the class with immense initial punch pop that will give him a shot at the next level. Carlin is an average athlete at best, lacking snap quickness, lateral agility and speed. Carlin is however able to win with his hands. In pass protection Carlin keeps a good base with pad level and hip engagement, creating a solid first punch and then active hands to deny a secondary rush. As a run blocker Carlin impacts on double teams, displaying proper jolt from his lower to upper half to generate power at the point of attack and move defenders off their anchor. In power run concepts, Carlin is able to seal off the backside with upper body contort and a tight grip at an awkward angle to prevent the defender from getting across his face. In a zone run scheme Carlin shows connected hands and feet. While he doesn’t have range in his steps, he is able to get hands in and prevent lineman from penetrating to the play side of wide zone. Carlin could look to improve his efficiency at the second level. Carlin’s steps/mobility at the second level are erratic and scattered, leading to him getting ran around or losing leverage with a poor angle at the point of attack. Carlin is more consistent than inefficient, along with being a force at the point of attack. Carlin has spot starter potential as a center in a power/gap scheme in the NFL.
